You have just acquired a beautiful new work of art and now it's time to hang it on the wall and enjoy it. So, what do you do next? Here are a few tips to help you enjoy your art.
One of the most common mistakes is hanging your art too high. The optimal height is eye level which means that the center of the painting should be about 58 inches from the floor. Art that is being positioned over a piece of furniture, such as a sofa or table should have a space of 6 to 8 inches from the furniture to the bottom of the frame.
It is usually visually better to have a work of art that is a little too large for the space than too small. As an example, a work of art should be about ½ to 2/3 the width of a sofa that it is being hung above.
Art can be arranged in different ways. It can be just a single piece on the wall or arranged in a grid or salon style. A grid arrangement works when a group of art is of the same size, shape and style and it is arranged in a geometric pattern. A space of 2 to 3 inches between each work of art works well when working with a grid pattern. A salon style is when a collection of diverse works of art are arranged on the wall in a way that balances the grouping. This takes a little practice. I like to lay the art out on the floor in the pattern that I plan to hang them. That way I can judge if I have created the correct balance and can easily move them around to try different arrangements before I hang them on the wall.
Picture hooks, which can be found at hardware stores, work better than regular nails. The nails for picture hooks are usually smaller and more secure because of the angle that they go in. Don't worry about the holes in the wall. They can easily be patched and painted over or you can do what I do and just hang another painting over them.
