John James Audubon

About The Artist

John James Audubon, 1785 – 1851. He was famously one of America’s first wildlife artists. His name is synonymous with conservation. He was an avid hunter, who killed the specimens depicted in his publications, but his in-depth studies have left a strong awareness of the beauties and complexities of nature. No artist before him or after has painted the lives of birds on such a heroic scale.

Audubon was born in Santa Domingo, now Haiti, and raised in Paris where he studied art. He moved to American and printed his world famous, four-volume series of life-sized bird portraits, “The Birds of America.” Other notable publications included: “Ornithological Biography”, “The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America.”
